"When she was one year old, he did not grow well and need to drink two gallons of water per day. Now she had to take 33 pills every day and the number of drugs will increase to about 80 pills later when he was teenager," said Katie, ABC News reported on Friday (03/01/2013).
Sarah took the drug Cystagon 6 times a day, including in the middle of the night that made her breath smell. Every hour he has to apply eye drops to prevent blindness. She also had to get an injection of growth hormone every day.
The doctor said that she would need a kidney transplant at age reaches 15 years. But Sarah including cystinosis patients are lucky, because most kids who get a diagnosis of cystinosis slower than Sarah, died at age 15.
A pharmaceutical company is expected to receive FDA approval for a new drug that can replace Cystagon. The new drugs are designed to work for 12 hours instead of another 6 hours to disturb his sleep.
