Precious metals are used not only as a store of wealth and jewels alone. Scientists recently made a vaccine that uses gold grains as basic materials. The gold vaccines have been tested to treat respiratory diseases in children.
The disease is caused by infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a major cause of respiratory infections in children. This disease causes several hundred thousand deaths and about 65 million infections per year, especially in children and the elderly.
The harmful effects of RSV caused by certain proteins, the F protein, which coats the surface of the virus. This protein allows the virus to enter the cell and allowed him to live with the body's cells, so the viruses are tough to eradicate.
Therefore, treatment of RSV are focused on the immune system can recognize protein F. But until now, scientists have difficulty creating a vaccine that targets the protein F. Researchers typically use a killed virus that is not active or as vaccines. But there are fears the virus dead or inactive can still be contagious. Therefore, researchers at Vanderbilt University in the U.S. created the gold particles are exactly the same size and shape of the virus.
