Do not consider trivial problems such as insomnia, in which a person has difficulty to sleep and stay awake. Recent study in Norway found that insomnia can increase the risk of heart failure up to 3-fold.
"Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder is most common, but also easily handled and treated," said Dr. Lars Laugsand from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, who led the study.
Many studies have studied the dangers of short sleep duration and poor sleep quality on health. Now researchers are trying to find connections between insomnia with heart failure, the study results show that the two are related, but that does not mean insomnia actually cause heart failure.
Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently, so there is sufficient blood throughout the body. Heart failure may be due to biological systems in the body is disrupted.
"One of the mechanisms that may activate the stress response in the body and can affect heart function is insomnia," Laugsand reported in the European Heart Journal March 6, as written iVillage.

To measure the effects of insomnia on the risk of heart failure, Laugsand team collected data on 54,000 men and women involved in the study of public health factors Norway between 1995 and 1997. At the beginning of the study, none of the participants had heart failure at baseline.
Researchers also asked some questions about the quality of sleep of the participants and whether they had difficulty falling asleep. After 11 years of follow-up, more than 1,400 participants have developed heart failure.
People who have symptoms of insomnia, increased 3-fold risk for heart failure, compared with those who slept well. When insomnia is accompanied by depression and anxiety, the risk that it could be increased up to 4-fold.
In particular, people who have trouble sleeping nearly every night and always feel tired in the morning more than once a week, was associated with an increased risk of heart failure, compared with those who never or rarely experience these symptoms.
This finding its remains, even after the researchers accounted for factors of age, sex, marital status, education, shift work, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, weight loss, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use and heart attacks ever experienced.
"Insomnia can increase the body's response to inflammation and stress, so this may be a reason for the increased risk of heart failure," said Dr. Gregg Fonarow, professor of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles and a spokesman for the American Heart Association.
Fonarow who was not involved in the study responded that further study is needed to determine whether preventing or treating insomnia will reduce the risk of developing heart failure.
