Emma Murphy, a woman 32 years old from Whitefield, Greater Mancheste, England, was diagnosed with epilepsy since the age of 12 years. For 20 years, the mother of five children regularly consume anti-seizure medication, Epilim, including when she was pregnant.
Doctors who deal never told about the risks of taking Epilim during pregnancy. And now five children, Chloe (9 years), Lauren (8 years), Luke (7 years) Erin (5 years), and Kian (3 years), all physical and developmental problems, ranging from autism, deaf, cerebral palsy to incontinence (unable to resist the urge to urinate).
"It is very difficult because my kids each have individual needs and dealing with autistic children is very challenging. Husband and I have a good routine and we can handle it, but this has put a lot of pressure on us as a couple," said Emma Murphy, as reported by the Daily Mail, Friday (01/03/2013).
Since her first pregnancy, she had never even told about the risks and side effects of consuming drugs on fetal development in epilepsy rahimnnya. Doctors, midwives and consultants, all advised him to take the drug despite knowing she was pregnant.
"I've completed the trust in the medical profession," he continued.
Suspicions Emma began to appear after all the children develop health problems. However, when consulted, doctors told Emma just depressed and there's nothing wrong with it.
It was only recently he found that there is a relationship between Epilim with birth defects. He was a little relieved to know the source of the cause, and sad because I never knew that the medicine is causing all of the conditions that occur in children.
Epilim is a registered trade name for sodium valporate, anti-epileptic drugs are also prescribed for people with bipolar disorder and depression. These drugs have an increased risk of birth defects if taken by pregnant women.
Epilim is one of the most effective drugs for controlling seizures. However, researchers at Liverpool University published a study this month, which found that children exposed in the womb Epilim six times more likely to develop a neurodevelopmental disorder.
The researchers concluded that one in three children born to mothers who take Epilim may have learning difficulties, low IQ and autism.
"This is a big medical dilemma," said Professor Gus Baker, a leading neuropsychologist who conducted the study.
